Detox daily with this DIY zero waste recipe for whiter teeth and a cleaner mouth. NOTE: Using this recipe for mouthwash is reserved for adults and older children because oil pulling is not for consumption.

Using coconut oil to detox has been used in India for many centuries with the traditional medicine system, Ayurveda. Coconut oil is quite powerful with oral health benefits like removing harmful bacteria like plaque, strengthening teeth, and helping prevent gingivitis. Build-up can lead to gum inflammation and tooth decay. I add activated charcoal made from coconuts to my DIY Mouthwash. Enamel tip: I don't recommend brushing with this recipe because of activated charcoal's natural adhesive properties. You can promote oral hygiene with activated charcoal because of its ability to detox the body of impurities. Medical professionals use it to aid with poison control. Activated charcoal will also cleanse and whiten your teeth while absorbing bacteria and removing stains. Note: After 5-20 minutes, be sure to spit in the trash because coconut oil would clog any drains.

Here is how you can make your Detoxifying Mouthwash:

  1. Mix one tablespoon of coconut oil and two capsules of activated charcoal. You can also use sesame or olive oil.
  2. (Optional) Add a couple of drops of a minty essential oil like peppermint or spearmint.
  3. Swish it around in your mouth for 5–20 minutes, being careful not to consume any.
  4. Spit the oil into a trash can once done.
  5. Rinse your mouth well using water before eating or drinking anything.

Repeat these steps a few times per week or even three times daily. You may also want to work your way up, starting with swishing for just 5 minutes and increasing the duration until you can do it for 15–20 minutes.
